Minor Hurlers Qualify For Premier 1 Final

Rebel Óg Premier 1 Hurling Championship Semi-Final Killeagh-Ita’s 3-16, Midleton 0-13

An outstanding performance from the full team gave Killeagh-Ita’s a deserved victory over Midleton in the Premier 1 Hurling semi-final played on an immaculate Cloyne pitch on Wednesday evening last. This game was played in a very competitive yet fair spirit, with credit due to both sides for contributing to such an entertaining game. David Ogbebor was first out of the blocks from Joe Larkin’s throw-in, bursting through the centre to point after 1 minute. We held the lead for the remaining 60 minutes. Kevin Murphy pointed the first of his four first-half scores (three ‘65s and a long-range free) before Midleton got off the mark. On twelve minutes Cathal Deane’s long delivery into the square landed into the net to give us a 1-3 to 0-2 lead, and we held this throughout. On 25 minutes, Andrew Leahy, who had just pointed, struck a beautiful goal to give us a 2-7 to 0-6 lead, before a bad knee injury to Christy Coughlan held up the game. We managed to hold our composure in spite of losing one of our team leaders, and held a nine-point lead at half time – 2-10 to 0-7. A critical play happened in the opening seconds of the second half, as Midleton burst through and seemed sure to score before Shane Kearney (who had been relatively untroubled in the first half), made a vital save. A goal at this time would surely have changed the complexion of the game. Sean Walsh and Andrew Leahy added points to extend our lead, before Midleton took control for the next 15 minutes. Five unanswered points were conceded to reduce the gap to just six – 2-12 to 0-12, but our defence was playing heroically, with Jack O’Rourke, Kevin Murphy and Eoin Fitzgibbon all vying for the “laoch na h-imeartha” award for their brilliant defending, blocking and clearing. Killian Treacy and David Ogbebor continued to trouble the Midleton defence, while Andrew Leahy showed the full range of his skills with catches, flicks, handpasses and brilliant ball control. He applied the finish to Midleton’s stubborn resistance when he goaled from a long Kevin Murphy delivery, and Cathal Deane had the final say in injury time to see us win by 12 points, 3-16 to 0-13. Credit to all of the players involved and the management team of Niall and Ciaran who have them finely tuned, and are getting the very best out of each player. Na Piarsaigh will be our opponents in the final which is due to be held on Monday September 12th at 8.15 p.m. in Páirc Uí Rinn.

Team: Shane Kearney, Emmet Barron, Jack O’Rourke, Dylan Hogan, Kevin Murphy (0-4f), Christy Coughlan, Jamie Landers, Keane Kelly Budds, Cathal Deane (1-1), Eoin Fitzgibbon, David Ogbebor (0-1), Killian Treacy (0-5, 0-2f), Andrew Leahy (2-3), Luke Fogarty, Sean Walsh (0-2). Subs used: Padraig Leahy & Richie Long.

A Game of Two Halves – U16s Get It Together In Second Half

Eastern B Fé 16 Football League Killeagh-Ita’s 4-8, Whitechurch 1-12

A sluggish first half performance followed by a lively second half gave our Under 16 footballers their sixth win of their league campaign when Whitechurch visited Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Thursday evening last. Whitechurch dominated the first half, leading by 1-4 to 0-0 after ten minutes before our boys started to contest and awake from their slumbers. Richie Long goaled after 13 minutes before Adrian Galvin (excellent again throughout) pointed. Whitechurch continued their dominance and led by 1-8 to 1-1 with half time approaching. A free from Richie followed by a good goal from Padraig Leahy reduced the deficit to just three points at half time (1-8 to 2-2) which probably was an injustice for our opponents’ efforts. With the wind at our backs in the second half and some astute changes from management as well as the magic half-time talks, we improved our efforts, performance, and scoring rate in the second half. Ball retention was much better, although we were still trailing by 1-10 to 3-2 entering the final quarter. Points from Padraig Leahy, Olan Broderick, Richie Long, and Paul Delaney and a third goal from Richie on 54 minutes saw us overturn the deficit and have our noses in front on referee Mary Swayne’s final whistle. Thanks to Whitechurch for a very competitive game, our final one before we welcome Clondrohid for championship next Saturday.

Team: Robbie Treacy, Kieran Daly, Daniel Lucey, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Ryan McCarthy, Dylan Hogan, Robert Sinclair, David Kelly, Padraig Leahy, Olan Broderick, Adrian Galvin, Olin Hennessy, Paul Delaney, Richie Long, Richie Landers. Subs used: Barry Motherway and Darragh Geary.

U12 League Final

Saturday August 27th saw Killeagh-Ita’s and Lisgoold tog out in Castlemartyr for their long awaited final. The day was good with a nice strong breeze in which Killeagh played against in the 1st half. Killeagh-Ita’s were first to score with an opening point from Daniel Walsh who was again in tip top form. Daniel scored a second point and Lisgoold followed up with their opening score. Daniel Buckley added another point for Killeagh-Ita’s but Lisgoold scored five more points to leave the score at half time Killeagh-Ita’s 0-0 3 Lisgoold 0-0 6.

Just after the restart Daniel Walsh scored a quick goal and followed up with another point. Colum Leahy who worked tirelessly in the forward line got on the scoresheet with a cracking goal. Daniel Walsh went on to score another 2 points with Callum Martin White scoring a point from open play. Lisgoold tried to get back in the game with 3 points but fantastic defending by Pierce Geary in goals kept our score safe. He had a great backline in Dylan McCarthy, Darragh O’Leary, Conor Meade, Ben Budds and Ben Fogarty. Callum Martin White and David Buckley kept the mid-field position ticking over and in the forward positions were Ciaran Brennan, Rory Motherway, Daniel Walsh, Colm Leahy and Danny Fitzgerald.

With the full time whistle about to blow Lisgoold found the back of the net but Rory Motherway found his way to the net once more for Killeagh-Ita’s and another goal was scored. Time was up and the delight of team, mentors and supporters could be felt all round. Full time whistle came and the celebrations began. Full time score – Killeagh 3-07 Lisgoold 1-09. A fantastic game of hurling was displayed by these young boys who are all passionate about their game.

Well done to Adrian Budds, Richie Brennan, Declan Fogarty, Seamus Considine and Ciaran O’Brien on bringing these boys to the winning position.

Team: Pierce Geary, Dylan McCarthy, Darragh O’Leary, Conor Meade, Ben Budds, Ben Fogarty, Callum Martin White, David Buckley, Ciaran Brennan, Rory Motherway, Daniel Walsh, Colum Leahy and Danny Fitzgerald. Our Subs today were: Diarmuid Buckley, Tommy Morrison, Liam Considine, Jack O’Connor, Eoin Kelly, Evan Daly and Sean O’Riordan.

JUVENILE NEWS

History made by Killeagh-Ita’s U16 team

Rebel Óg Eastern A Fé 16 Hurling FinalKilleagh-Ita’s 5-13, Cloughduv 5-8

An enthralling game of hurling played by two hugely committed teams ended in a five-point victory for Killeagh-Ita’s at reiteoir Cormac Dineen’s final whistle in Shanbally on Monday evening last. Joyous scenes followed as this team and their supporters celebrated their first ever under-age title and Eastern Board Chairman Liam Shanahan presented the beautiful Rebel Óg cup to our dedicated captain Dylan Hogan. This game burst into life from the throw in with Ben O’Connor rattling the net a la Joe Canning after just 17 seconds. When Richie Long, with a fine assist from Olan Broderick, added a second goal on 7 minutes to give us a 2-1 to 0-1 lead, things looked good. However, this Cloughduv team were far from despondent and they showed tremendous resilience to rattle in their own goals on 11, 20 and 21 minutes, and suddenly they led by 3-6 to 2-5. Thankfully, our defence shored up for the remainder of the half and a penalty and subsequent point by Ben levelled matters at half time. Things looked bad after six minutes of the second half as Cloughduv added two more quick goals, the first from a counter-attack after we could have scored at the other end. On forty minutes, Ben added his third and our fourth goal to reduce the margin to one, before Padraig Leahy and Olan Broderick pointed to put us ahead. Then a shrewd sideline move which saw Adrian Galvin rattle the net shortly after his relocation to corner-forward pushed us 5-11 to 5-7 ahead. A Richie Long point from play added to two Ryan McCarthy frees saw us home, with our right wing players (Darragh Geary, David Kelly and Richie Long) clearing a torrent of ball to suppress the Cloughduv attacks. Congratulations to our hard-working team and panel, and a bualadh bos mór to the three wise men Sean, Ger and Dick for their development of this team into Eastern A winners. Hopefully they can negotiate their next hurdle now which is a County semi-final versus formidable Western champions Sam Maguires from Dunmanway.

Team: Brian Murphy, Darragh Geary, Daniel Lucey, Kieran Daly, David Kelly, Dylan Hogan, Adrian Galvin (1-0), Ryan McCarthy (0-6, 0-5f), Richie Landers, Richie Long (1-1), Barry Motherway, Padraig Leahy (0-2), Ben O’Connor (3-2), Oisin McCarthy (0-1), Olan Broderick (0-1). Subs: Dara Motherway, Olin Hennessy, James Kent, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Robert Sinclair, Danny Cunningham, Owen Cosgrove, Darragh O’Connor, Tommy Noonan.

Minors in control against Carrignavar to claim league points

Fé 18 Minor Football League Carrignavar 0-5, Killeagh-Ita’s 2-7

Well done to Adrian Budds and his band of faithful footballers who headed to the College field in Carrignavar on Tuesday 26th July to take on the home side. This was our boy’s fourth game in the Rebel Og Eastern 18B league competition and with two wins out of three games it was important to win this game to hold our positon on the league table. Conditions under foot and overhead were not great however this did little to dampen the spirits of our footballers who were up for the challenge. There is great credit due to the U16 players who had to be called upon to make up the numbers after their fantastic victory the previous night in Shanbally to be crowned East Cork Champions. Cathal opened the scoring with a lovely point from play and our dominance on this game was rubberstamped when Olin Hennessy slotted the football past the Carrignavar goalie for a fantastic goal from play. Cathal scored another point from a 40 metre free before the home side scored a point also from a free. Cathal was awarded a penalty when he was taken down with ball in hand while goal-ward bound, and a very well taken penalty was skillfully finished to the net by David. A second scored free for Carrignavar brought the first half to a close on a scoreline of 2-2 to 0-2. David got the second half off to a great start for Killeagh/Ita’s when he put the ball over the crossbar, we continued to dominate in the second half and when the ref blew the full time whistle we were comfortable winners with a score of 2-7 to 0-5 . Well done to all this was a great team performance, our backline was very solid and with only 5 points scored by Carrignavar of which two were scored from play we know how hard they worked. It also gave some players an opportunity to play in different positions with James Kent working hard in the forwards, Darragh Geary very busy at wing-forward in the second half, and Richie Long calmness personified between the sticks. For good measure his kick outs had both length and accuracy – as good as Stephen Cluxton!

Next outing for our Minor footballers is on Bank Holiday Monday in Killeagh at 6.00 versus Bride Rovers, please come down and support the boys.

Panel: R Long, K Daly, E Barron, D Geary, J Landers, J O’Rourke, A Galvin, E Fitzgibbon, K Kelly Budds (0-1), B Motherway, C Deane (0-4), F McDonnell, J Kent, D Ogbebor (1-01), O Hennessy (1-01), C Coughlan.

Senior Hurlers get out of jail!

Senior Hurling Championship Round 2B Killeagh 4-12, UCC 1-20

Jubilant scenes abounded in Clonmult Park, Midleton on Sunday evening last when a last-minute Shane Smiddy goal gave Killeagh senior hurlers a victory over a talented UCC side in Round 2B of the senior hurling championship and put our young team in to Round 4. Victory seemed to be out of our reach with UCC’s dominant second half display (excellent performances from Tom Devine, Anthony Spillane and Chris O’Leary among others) which saw them turn around a three point half time deficit (2-8 to 0-11) to lead by three (1-20 to 3-11) with 60 minutes gone. This was in contrast to the first half where Killeagh played some brilliant hurling with two excellent goals. John O’Connor’s gut bursting run after three minutes set up David Cahill for the first goal on three minutes, while Darragh Cahill added the second on 14 minutes. When Shane Smiddy added his first score (1-3 in total in a real “Roy Of The Rovers” display) it left our team 2-5 to 0-6 at the end of the first quarter. However, we were limited to just three points from David Cahill frees for the remainder of the half, and this trend continued for the third quarter where we failed to add to our score while UCC scored 1-9 in this same thirty-minute period. Despite being under the cosh, our team kept battling, and were rewarded with an excellent Gary Leahy goal on 48 minutes, finishing expertly after receiving a perfect pass from the returning Andy Walsh. Shane added two points but it looked like being too little (UCC had many chances to widen the gap but were guilty of poor shooting in the final ten minutes) before that late great goal from Shane. Well done to our team and management who have now ensured that we are into Round 3.

Team: Bernard Rochford, Allen Keniry, Padraig Carroll, Cian Fogarty, Patrick O’Brien, Kevin Murphy (0-1), Kieran Lane, Brian Collins, John O’Connor, Killian Treacy (0-1), Daniel Walsh, Shane Smiddy (1-3), Gary Leahy (1-0), Darragh Cahill (1-1), David Cahill (0-6f). Sub used: Andrew Walsh

Golf Classic once again a major success

The annual Killeagh GAA Golf Classic (AKA the Ray Rochford Tour-De-Force) was once again a three-day master success, with over 140 teams enjoying the beautiful West Waterford course in mostly fine weather (bar the unlucky last eight teams out on Thursday evening who got a bit of a drenching). Ray, Sean and Ursula were on hand throughout to welcome everyone and ensure that the Killeagh GAA Golf Classic maintains its status as one of the best Classics in the country. Winners were Eamonn Brennan’s team with 112 points, followed by Apple on 101 and East Cork Oil on 100. Rathcormac Tyres were best Gross, while Breathnachs were best non-GUI team followed by Fogarty’s Garage. June White’s team were best ladies. Full results will be available in the coming days on http://www.killeaghgaa.org. Many thanks to all those who played and our over 150 sponsors who all contributed to make the Classic another highly successful event. Thanks Ray, the statue is long overdue!

Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile News

Double Delight For Killeagh-Ita’s in Championship

Premier 1 Minor Hurling Championship Quarter-Final Killeagh-Ita’s 1-10, Douglas 1-8

Eastern A Fé 16 Hurling Championship Semi-Final Killeagh-Ita’s 4-14, Kiltha Óg 2-13

It was a fantastic week for Killeagh-Ita’s older age teams as the Under 16 and minor teams both negotiated challenging opponents to secure critical championship wins in the past week. First up on a fine Monday evening in Rostellan was the Under 16 game where supporters witnessed a cracking tie with brilliant scores, defending, catching, hooking, blocking and free-taking on display from both sides. Kiltha had the wind in the first half but hit a few wides early on before settling in to the game. Scores were hard to come by with Kiltha leading by 1-8 to 105 at half time. Our goal came from a Ben O’Connor free but Kiltha’s goal was the highlight of the half, an unstoppable bullet from impressive full-forward Kyle Quinn Waites. The second half saw Ben add a quick goal and a point to put us ahead before Kiltha took over and dominated for 15 minutes, with a second goal from Quinn Waites and top-class free-taking from two of their other star players Joe Stack and Daragh Moran (credit also to outstanding Under 14 player Ciaran Joyce) giving them a 2-12 to 2-9 lead. Killeagh-Ita’s had their own sharpshooter from placed balls, with Ryan McCarthy knocking over 6 in succession which levelled the score with 8 minutes to go. Padraig Leahy, Oisin McCarthy and Barry Motherway were working very hard in the middle third of the pitch, leading to persistent fouling from the Kiltha defence. It was a free awarded harshly against Kiltha Og for over-carrying (reiteoir Brian Murphy had an excellent game otherwise) which then had dramatic consequences when Ryan’s long-range effort dropped into the net to give our boys a three point cushion. Kiltha chased the game from here to the finish and were denied by an excellent save from the other Brian Murphy in the Killeagh-Ita’s goals. A third goal for Ben in injury time gave an unbalanced look to the scoreboard at the final whistle – in truth this game could have gone either way and Kiltha were unlucky to be eliminated from this championship despite having contributed to a classic game. Elation for our boys, who qualify to play Cloughduv (winners over Nemo Rangers in the other semi-final) on Sunday July 24th in Ballinlough at 7.00 p.m.

Team: Brian Murphy, .Darragh Geary, Daniel Lucey, Kieran Daly, Richie Long, Richie Landers, Adrian Galvin, Padraig Leahy, Ryan McCarthy, Oisin McCarthy, Barry Motherway, Padraig Leahy, Olin Hennessy, Olan Broderick, Ben O’Connor. Subs used: Dara Motherway, Paul Delaney.

Thursday evening’s minor championship quarter final against Douglas in Cobh lacked the entertainment factor and scoring rate of Monday’s U16 game, but that was almost wholly due to the rain that poured down at various stages during the evening, spoiling the game as a spectacle. Both teams worked extremely hard and excellent defending from both sides kept the score low. At half time Killeagh-Ita’s led by 0-7 to 0-4, with four different forwards and one midfielder (David Ogbebor, Keane Budds, Eoin Fitzgibbon, Sean Walsh and Aaron Walsh) getting excellent points from play, added to two Killian Treacy frees. Douglas had difficulty with their accuracy, with seven wides, which Killeagh-ita’s unfortunately bettered in the second half with eight wides of their own. Scores were very scarce for 20 minutes after half time with only two frees converted by each team, and chances missed on both sides. Our defence was performing heroically, particularly Emmet Barron, Jack O’Rourke and Jamie Landers, while Killian Treacy and Sean Walsh were very busy in the other half. Two points from play in the 50th and 51st minute for Douglas left us with a precarious one point lead, with Douglas letting slip a chance to equalise soon after from a convertible free. A goalmouth scramble with two minutes left saw Andrew Leahy push home a crucial goal from close range, and a Killian Treacy point gave us a five-point cushion with time almost up. A late penalty for Douglas was not sufficient for them to save the game, as we had a two point lead (1-10 to 1-8) at referee Tim Cummins’ final whistle.

Team: Fionn McDonnell, Emmet Barron, Jack O’Rourke, Dylan Hogan, Jamie Landers, Christy Coughlan, Kevin Murphy, Aaron Walsh, Keane Kelly Budds, Eoin Fitzgibbon, Killian Treacy, David Ogbebor, Sean Walsh, Andrew Leahy, Shane Kearney. Subs used: Cathal Deane, Padraig Leahy.

Rebel Óg Premier 2 Hurling League Killeagh-Ita’s 6-16, Carrigtwohill 2-7

Killeagh-Ita’s U14’s took to the pitch in Carrigtwohill on Friday 15th July for their second hurling league game, against Carrigtwohill. The home advantage however didn’t work in Carrig’s favour as Killeagh-Ita’s proved too strong and had a very comfortable win on a scoreline of 6-16 to 2-07. Carrigtwohill opened the scoring with a goal however this didn’t deter our boys with Brian converting a free to get us started. The next 5 points went to Killeagh-Ita’s before the home side scored a point from a free. Ciaran O’Rourke and Ben O’Connor responded in style with a goal apiece. When the ref blew the half time whistle Killeagh-Ita’s were leading on a score line of 3-09 to 1-04. Killeagh-Ita’s continued to dominate in the second half with Ciaran O Rourke, Ben and Eoin Brenner managing to get the sliothar past an excellent Carrigtwohill goalie who was working hard to keep the ball out of the back of his net. Well done to all the team who played great hurling, this was a panel win with every player getting match time. Full time score was 6-16 to 2-07.

Panel: G Walsh, P Landers, R Farquahar, D Coleman, R Treacy, B O Connor (2-06), R Bernard, C Coughlan (0-01), D Collins, D Doherty (0-01), B Murphy (0-02), P Kent, C Leahy (0-03), C O’Rourke (3-02), T McCarthy, C Treacy, A Fitzgibbon, J Fogarty, P Mackey, E Brenner (1-00), E Lane

Páirc Uí Chinnéide Goes Smoke-Free – Clock Is Ticking Towards August 1st!

“If you go down to the woods today …” begins the “Teddy Bears’ Picnic”. Well, we’ve got a new rap that will apply from Monday August 1st: “if you go down to the pitch today, leave your cigarettes at home!” We’re going Smoke-Free, for the benefit of all, especially our younger members. Hopefully every user / visitor will respect our new direction and help to make our shared air cleaner and healthier for all of us.

CouchTo5K Full Of Perspiration and Inspiration

Our CouchTo5K running group had more new members last Monday, and a motivating pep talk from Liam O’Reilly, expert fitness guru and coach to professional athletes. This encouraged some of the group to meet again on Wednesday and Thursday, and we would like to add further numbers to this group over the next few weeks. The gender balance has seen the males fall behind, so men of Killeagh and around, get up off the couch and put one foot in front of the other! No point using Euro 2016 as an excuse now, with only three matches left, none on Mondays! The Olympics are coming, this is your chance for your own little mini-Olympic feeling!

Meanwhile, our committed Saturday morning running group in Glenbower continue to meet at 9.00 a.m. every Saturday and we’ve had some more new people join us last Saturday. Daylight hours are at their maximum now, so 9.00 a.m. is really the middle of the day! Get up, clear the cobwebs, and you’ll be buzzing for the rest of Saturday!

Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile News

Rebel Óg Premier 2 Fé 15 Hurling League

Killeagh-Ita’s 6-15, Blackrock 5-8

Our Under 15 team maintained their 100% record in this year’s Premier 2 Hurling League with a 10 point victory over Blackrock in Killeagh on Friday evening last. The margin of victory certainly does not reflect adequately how close this game was, as a flurry of four goals between the 49th and 57th minute helped propel our team to victory. Before the first of those (one of three for Ben O’Connor), the margin had been reduced to one (2-13 to 4-6) and Blackrock had a strong wind behind them. However, this shook our team into action, and in that spell, they scored four goals and conceded just two points. The first half had seen our team play well at times, but having to give second best at times to a committed Rockies outfit, who goaled in the first and 20th minute (this goal should have been prevented as a long free dropped all the way to the net). In between their goals, we dominated up front, and got excellent scores of the green and white variety. Olan Broderick had an outstanding opening quarter, scoring 1-4 from play and rattling the crossbar with another effort, while Darragh O’Connor finished expertly to the net having received a pass from Dara Motherway. A sluggish second half saw us add just two points in the closing 13 minutes of the half, leaving the score 2-10 to 2-4 in our favour at half time. Dara Motherway added two points after the restart but the lead shrank dramatically with the Rockies’ third and fourth goals, before we took control once again for that final quarter. Well done to our team who have now beaten Carrigaline, Ballygarvan, Valley Rovers and Blackrock, but have two tough games remaining against Ballincollig and Na Piarsaigh.

Team: Brian Murphy, Danny Cunningham, Daniel Lucey, Paul Delaney, David Kelly, Richie Landers, Robert Sinclair, Ryan McCarthy, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Ben O’Connor, Oisin McCarthy, Owen Cosgrove, Darragh O’Connor, Olan Broderick, Dara Motherway, Tommy Noonan.

Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile News

Hard-earned victory for Under 12 boys

Fé 12 Rebel Óg Eastern ‘A’ Hurling League Ballinhassig 2-6, Killeagh-Ita’s 6-2

Having lost at home to St. Catherine’s on the previous Tuesday (the 2-ball controversy will be talked about in some houses for quite some time yet!), it was imperative that our Under 12 boys come away from their trip to Ballinhassig on Friday evening with a victory if they were to maintain their interest in this league. It didn’t look too promising in the early stages as Ballinhassig peppered our goal and only good goalkeeping from Pierse Geary and strong defending from Dylan McCarthy, Danny Fitzgerald and Darragh O’Leary kept the scores conceded column low. After 10 minutes the sides were level with our 1-1 (Colm Leahy’s goal and a Daniel Walsh free) equalling Ballinhassig’s four points. A goal for Ballinhassig gave them a deserved lead but David Buckley’s ’65 dropped to the net, levelling the score again. The rain (what’s that, I hear you ask) came on 20 minutes and our forwards made hay in the rain, adding two further goals from Daniel and Colm just before half-time. 5 scores a-piece, then, but four of ours were green flags, whereas only one of Ballinhassig’s was. The second half saw this symmetry replicated; with 2-1 for our boys (Colm and Daniel) edging Ballinhassig’s 1-2. In truth there was nothing between the teams from start to finish, we just managed to get more of our 8 scores under the bar than our opponents managed with their 8. Excellent performances from our scorers and from David Buckley, Ben Budds, Ben Fogarty and the full-back line pulled us over the line. Well played to our boys who have now qualified for a league play off at least. Special mention to the three boys who were playing their second game of the day having lined out with Inch NS earlier in their Sciath na Scol final victory – well done Ben, Darragh and Rory.

Team: Pierse Geary, Danny Fitzgerald, Darragh O’Leary, Dylan McCarthy, Conor Meade, David Buckley, Evan Daly, Ben Budds, Ben Fogarty, Ciaran Brennan, Rory Motherway, Daniel Walsh, Callum Martin White, Tommy Morrison, Colm Leahy, Darragh O’Brien and Diarmuid Fogarty.

Glory for Inch NS in Sciath Na Scol Final

Inch NS 2-3, Ballintotas NS 2-0.

Inch National School did the double for this school year when they once again defeated unlucky Ballintotas NS in the Hurling Final played in Cork I. T. Stadium on Friday morning last. Congratulations to the full panel and to their muinteoiri / bainisteoiri Maurice O’Mahony and John Irwin. Rory Motherway got Inch off the mark with a fine point inside the 2nd minute, before Colm Leahy pulled on the ground to get the first goal of the game. Colm then collected Rory’s long delivery and was fouled outside the danger area, whereupon Jamie Fogarty stepped up to bang in the second goal of the game. Was it going to be a one-sided game? No fear, as Ballintotas restructured their team and scored two fine goals of their own, with both goals from the excellent Ciarmhac Smyth, who was assisted throughout by the equally excellent Darragh McCarthy. Jamie Fogarty added a second point for Inch, leaving the boys in red ahead by 2-2 to 2-0 at half time. The second half saw really exciting play at all parts of the field, but no luck with scoring from either side bar another point from Jamie, this time from a ’65. It was a deserved victory, with three strong 6th class leaders George Walsh, Evan Lane and Jamie Fogarty leading the charge for Inch, and the other three 6th class players, Sarah Kent, Aaron Fitzgibbon and Jack Flanagan also playing their part with solid performances.

Team: Ben Budds, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Jamie Fogarty, Sarah Kent, Evan Lane, Jack Flanagan, George Walsh, Rory Motherway, Ben Walsh, Darragh O’Leary, Colm Leahy, Barry Walsh.

U12 Hurling league: Killeagh-Ita’s v’s St. Catherine’s.

Team Pearse Geary, Ben Fogarty, Darragh O’Leary, Tommy Morrison, Conor Meade, Ben Budds, Dylan McCarthy, Rory Motherway, Callum Martin White, Evan Daly, David Buckley, Daniel Walsh, Ciaran Brennan, Column Leagh and Danny Fitzgerald.

The end result was not to be in our favour with a last minute goal from St. Catherine’s making the final score – St. Catherine’s 5-7 Killeagh 5-4.

It was a fantastic game of hurling and well done to all our boys.

No joy for Killeagh-Ita’s in Fe14 County Final Clash. Killeagh-Ita’s and Kiltha Óg took to the pitch in Ballinacurra for the Carrigaline Court Fe14 Premier 2 County Hurling Final on Wednesday 8th last. Our boys worked tirelessly unfortunately their endeavours did not convert to scores on the board. We were first to register a score, when a free awarded to Killeagh-Ita’s was skilfully pointed by Ben; unfortunately this was to be the only time in the game that we were ahead. Despite being first to score the boys never settled into the game and failed to display the standard of hurling that we have become familiar with in recent games. When Cathal Egan blew for half time there was a 7 point difference between the two teams. Killeagh/Ita’s were first to score in the second half however Kiltha Óg responded in kind. A couple of unfortunate goals in the second half put the game beyond the reach of our boys and the cup was to go to Kiltha Óg. Well done to our panel and mentors who gave us a great championship and reached a county final: now they will turn their attention to the league. Final score was a victory to Kiltha Óg of 3-14 to 1-05

Team: G Walsh, E Lane, J Fogarty, P Landers, D Collins, B Murphy, R Treacy, P Kent, C Treacy, B O Connor, C Coughlan, D Doherty, R Bernard, C O Rourke, C Leahy Subs: B Budds, R Farquhar, T McCarthy, D Coleman, A Fitzgibbon, E Brenner, P Mackey, D Scully.

Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile News

Comprehensive championships win for u14

Fé 14 Premier 2 Hurling Championship Killeagh-Ita’s v Ballygarvan, Killeagh, Monday May 23rd 2016
Killeagh-Ita’s welcomed Ballygarvan to Pairc Uí Chinnéide on Monday 23rd May for their first game in this year’s U14 hurling championship. It was a beautiful evening for hurling and in front of a large home crowd reitoir Joe Larking threw in the ball at 7.30. Killeagh Ita’s stamped their authority on this game from the off and within a minute had registered a goal when Evan Lane fielded the sliotar to Ben O’Connor who laid it off to Ciaran O’Rourke who had no difficulty in finding the back of the Ballygarvan goal. No sooner had the goalie pucked out the ball when Colm Treacy gathered the ball, passed to Remy Bernard and once again the green flag was raised. Two minutes, two goals and a dream start. Killeagh-Ita’s were on the attack again straight away from the puck out and fantastic stick work from Ryan Farquhar was rewarded by a third goal, and, unbelievably, in three short minutes, the full-forward line had bagged a goal each! Ballygarvan, still reeling from the three quick goals recovered to a score a point, but not to be outdone Christian Coughlan quickly replied by slotting the ball over the bar. Ballygarvan continued their attempts to get a hold on the game by adding another point, however Killeagh-Ita’s added further scores from Ciaran and Ben, followed by two fantastic shots on goal by Ben which left the goalie with no chance of a save and Killeagh-Ita’s holding a very comfortable lead. As the first half was drawing to a close Killeagh-Ita’s scored a further three points as Brian, Remy and Ben each pointed. Ballygarvan did manage to get a goal back and the half time score stood at 5-08 to 1-02.

The second half began exactly as the first with Ciaran scoring another goal quickly followed by yet another goal expertly scored by Ben; there was no stopping our boys! Two points came from placed balls for Ben, one from a free and one from a 65. There were plenty of changes of personnel on the field as the bench was emptied. Darragh Coleman wasn’t long on the field when he put his mark on the score sheet with a lovely point. It was Remy‘s turn to be called ashore but he was not leaving the field without one last goal. Ballygarvan found it very difficult to break down our defence due to our outstanding backs, Evan, Jamie, Padraig, David and even when they did penetrate we had George in our goal that pulled off some wonderful saves. Ballygarvan were held scoreless in the second half and Killeagh-Ita’s were not finished scoring yet as Brian added two points in quick succession. Darragh Coleman showed no mercy to Ballygarvan (or the scoreboard!!) When he brought our goal tally up further and it was lights out on our electronic scoreboard… One last opportunity wasn’t lost by Daniel Doherty who squeezed in a final goal before Joe Larkin blew up his final whistle.

Next outing for these boys is on Monday 30th in Passage west when they take on Carrigaline in the next round of u14 championship. Throw in at 7 pm. Please come out and support the boys.

Team: George Walsh, Evan Lane, Jamie Fogarty, Padraig Landers, David Collins, Brian Murphy, Robbie Treacy, Paul Kent, Colm Treacy, Ben O’Connor, Daniel Doherty, Christian Coughlan, Remy Bernard, Ciaran O’Rourke, Ryan Farquhar. Subs Darragh Coleman, Tony McCarthy, David Scully, Eoin Brenner, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Ben Budds, Ciaran Leahy

P.S. Well done to the boys attending Inch NS who took to the pitch for a second time that day, having earlier beaten Conna in a Sciath Na Scol semi-final. They qualified for the final against Ballintotas NS which will take place on Friday week, June 10th, at 10.30 a.m. in CIT. Well done also to múinteoir and bainisteoir iontach John Irwin who had his charges well primed for both games. Who says a man can’t multi-task?

Fé 9 Hurling Killeagh-Ita’s v St. Catherine’s, Ballynoe, Saturday May 21st 2016

Killeagh-Ita’s Under 9 boys played their first game of the season on Saturday last against St. Catherine’s. The boys braved the heavy showers and played extremely well, showing plenty of new skills. Twenty players travelled, showing great appetite for the game. We have plenty of hurling and football matches organised over the coming weeks. Well done boys!

Fé 15 Super Touch Hurling Blitz in Killeagh, Saturday May 28th 2016

Those lucky enough to be in Killeagh on Saturday afternoon saw hurling with a difference – with four 10-a-side Under 15 teams participating in the GAA’s Super Touch Competition which was held throughout Munster at a number of different venues. Killeagh-Ita’s as hosts welcomed Fr. O’Neill’s, Castlelyons and Lisgoold, and 6 fast-flowing, high-scoring games ensued. Given that games were only 12 minutes a side and the teams were shooting into Under 12 size goals, the quality and quantity of points and goals scored was exceptional, from all four teams. Killeagh-Ita’s had to dig out their win against O’Neill’s in the opening game, as they trailed by 2-2 to 0-1 at one stage early on, and 2-2 to 0-4 at half-time. A succession of good points brought them back into the game in the second half before Cathal Fitzgibbon scored the crucial goal which gave us the victory by 1-9 to 2-4. On the other pitch Lisgoold had overcome Castlelyons under reiteoir Ger Scully’s watch. We swapped pitches, and referee James Hennessy came with us, to play Castlelyons, and we managed to get on top after a very entertaining game, winning by 7-7 to 3-5. Darragh O’Connor featured very well in this game with an excellent 1-1 in the second half. The only difference between the teams in this game was our ability to score goals at the right time, with Castlelyons showing great skill and commitment, and at least three of their players featuring as ‘laochra an lae’, were such honours to be awarded. Meanwhile, Lisgoold had beaten O’Neills by 1-6 to 1-3 to set up a showdown between the greens and blues. And what a showdown it was – Lisgoold took an early lead and led 1-6 to 1-2 at half-time, before our boys once again whittled down the lead, with Olan Broderick and Dara Motherway leading the scoring charts as they had done throughout the day, ably assisted by Richie Landers and Ryan McCarthy’s exceptionally accurate free-taking. At the final whistle, we held the slenderest of leads, 2-8 to 1-10, and as a result qualified for the final of this competition, to be held in Mallow on Saturday June 11th. This was a brilliant team effort throughout, with the manner of the comebacks greatly pleasing our managers Ger and Sean. Captaen an lae Aaron O’Connell was cool in the cúl, and his quick puck-outs set up many an attack. Daniel Lucey, Owen Cosgrove and George Sinclair covered very well in defence, while Ryan and Richie played at their usual high standard. David Kelly and Oisin McCarthy were all-action in the middle third, and the danger-men, Dara, Cathal, Olan and Darragh got the vital scores up front. We wish to thank our visiting teams for contributing positively to a great day’s hurling.

Team: Aaron O’Connell, Owen Cosgrove, Daniel Lucey, George Sinclair, Ryan McCarthy, Richie Landers, David Kelly, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Richie Landers, Darragh O’Connor, Dara Motherway, Olan Broderick.

Fé 10 Hurling Tournament, Ballyduff, Saturday 28th 2016

Congratulations to our Under 10 boys who played Lismore, Carrigtwohill and Fermoy in the prestigious Ballyduff Upper Tournament on Saturday last and won all three games. Sean Meade was the hero of the day in goals, with Ben Walsh, Cathal Landers, Michael O’Donovan, Barry Walsh, Jamie Hyde, Mark Buttimer, Fionn Murphy, Michael Doherty, Conor Murphy, Sean Lynch and Conor Burns doing very well outfield. We have qualified for the semi-final which will be held in Ballyduff on Saturday next, June 4th.

Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile News

Good performances but no points for Under 13s

Rebel Óg Eastern ‘A’ Fé 13 Football Killeagh-Ita’s 2-5, Whitechurch 4-5

Rebel Óg Premier 2 Fé 13 Hurling Killeagh-Ita’s 2-5, Cobh 3-9

A busy week for our Under 13 boys saw them host two games, play well, but ultimately lose both to better teams. The football game v Whitechurch on Wednesday evening saw our opponents get off to a flier with a goal after 20 seconds, before we equalised with three points from Colm Treacy, Evan Lane and Eoin Brenner. Our defence got on top for a while with Jamie Fogarty, Rory Motherway and Paudie Mackey playing very well. Whitechurch came back again with 1-2 before Colm’s second point and a goal from Evan Lane left us trailing by 2-2 to 1-4 at half time. The second half saw Whitechurch’s defence dominate, and we only added 1-1 in the final five minutes, both scored by Jamie Fogarty who moved from full-back to full-forward in an attempt to rescue the game. Unfortunately, in spite of excellent defending from Ben Budds, Rory Lynch and goalkeeper Conor Meade, Whitechurch sneaked in for two goals in the same period, which gave them a comfortable two-goal cushion at Jim Daly’s final whistle.

Team: Conor Meade, Jack Flanagan, Jamie Fogarty, Rory Motherway, Rory Lynch, George Walsh, Paudie Mackey, David Buttimer, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Cormac Fitzpatrick, Colm Treacy, Eoin Brenner, Ben Budds, Evan Lane, David Buckley, Dale McMahon, Ciaran Brennan.

48 hours later, it was the small ball, and Cobh, with a few of our players unavoidably absent. Some exceptionally strong Cobh players dominated the centre-field throughout this game, yet our boys, physically smaller, battled right to the end. Two quick-fire goals from Conor Meade and David Buttimer, either side of a David Buckley point, gave us an unlikely lead after 20 minutes, 2-1 to 0-3, before a pointed free and a late Cobh goal levelled the game ag leath am. The second half saw action at both ends, with David Buckley’s two beautiful points and Eoin Brenner’s two frees our scores. Cobh managed to do better, with two further goals, despite excellent stops from Ben Budds and great clearing by Ben Fogarty, George Walsh and Colm Treacy. Well done to our boys who have two further hurling games this week, versus Carrigtwohill (Tuesday) and Youghal (Friday).

Team: Ben Budds, Ben Fogarty, Jamie Fogarty, Rory Motherway, Rory Lynch, George Walsh, Paudie Mackey, David Buttimer, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Conor Meade, Evan Lane, Eoin Brenner, David Buckley, Colm Treacy, Ciaran Brennan, Cormac Fitzpatrick.

U16s get first win at second attempt

Rebel Óg Eastern ‘A’ Fé 16 Hurling Killeagh-Ita’s 2-19, Erins Own 3-3

Having been beaten by Kiltha Óg in their opening league game, our Under 16 hurlers were anxious to get back on the horse in their final game before the Junior Cert moratorium kicks in. Erins Own kindly agreed to concede home venue for this game on Thursday evening last. A quick goal after one minute gave our opponents a flying start, but our boys responded with three points from Padraig Leahy, and Olin Hennessy and new centre-forward Barry Motherway also pointing. Olin set up full-forward Olan Broderick for a goal before Erins Own got their second green flag. This left the score at 1-12 to 2-0 at half time, and we managed to contain the Erins Own boys reasonably well throughout the second half, with all of our defenders, including the replacements, continuing to keep the score down. Dara Motherway added a second goal while Brian Murphy made some excellent saves before being beaten in the final minute by a third Erins Own goal from centre-back Adam Murphy, one of their better players on the night. Best wishes to our ten Under 15 and Under 16 players who put the hurleys behind the door for a little while now as they concentrate on “the books” in preparation for June 8th and beyond.

Team: Brian Murphy, James Kent, Oisin McCarthy, Darragh Geary, Adrian Galvin, Richie Landers, Kieran Daly, David Kelly, Ryan McCarthy, Padraig Leahy, Barry Motherway, Richie Long, Olin Hennessy, Olan Broderick, Dara Motherway, Robert Sinclair, Owen Cosgrove, Danny Cunningham, Paul Delaney, Tommy Noonan.

Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile News

U/12 ‘A’ Hurling League; Killeagh-Ita’s v Lisgoold in Killeagh

Team: Dylan McCarthy, Daniel Walsh, David Buckley, Tommy Noonan, Rory Motherway, Danny Fitzgerald, Eric Millerick, Ben Fogarty (C), Colm Leahy, Pierce Geary, Conor Meade, Ciaran Brennan, Evan Daly, Ben Budds and Callum Martin White.

Lisgoold got off to a good start with the wind in their favour with a 2 goal lead followed by 3 points. Daniel Walsh was the first to score for Killeagh-Ita’s with 1 goal and added a further point a minute later. Lisgoold went on to score another 2 goals and 3 points in the 1st half.

The second half was a better one for the Killeagh-Ita’s boys with another 3 goals and 3 points this time from Colum Leahy, followed by a further 2 points from Daniel Walsh. David Buckley and Callum Martin White also added a point each to the Killeagh-Ita’s tally.

Final score was Lisgoold 5.12 and Killeagh-Ita’s 4.8. A great finish from the Killeagh-Ita’s team who had lots of scores in the 2nd half but this time not enough to catch up. Well done boys.

U14 footballers hold off St Colmans to secure league points

Rebel Óg Eastern Fe 14 A Football League. Killeagh-Ita’s 5-5 St Colmans 2-9

Wednesday 27th April saw our footballers travel to Cloyne to take on St Colmans in our fourth match of this league campaign. This was definitely the clichéd game of two halves; Killeagh-Ita’s scored an impressive 5-5 in the first half while St Colmans went to the dugout after registering 1-2. Play resumed with Killeagh-Ita’s playing without the benefit of the breeze and despite numerous attempts failed to build on their first half score. St Colmans were pressing hard to score and slotted the football over the cross bar several times. With the match heading towards the full time whistle and Killeagh-Ita’s gallantly defending their goal mouth the reiteoir awarded a penalty to St Colmans. Despite the best efforts of our goalie the well taken penalty was scored . It was with much relief to both players and supporters that the final whistle blew and we could take shelter from the biting cold breeze. There is great credit due to our young footballers who took to the pitch and played some fantastic football while remaining disciplined and focused. Well done players and mentors. Team: C Coughlan, D Coleman, Jamie Fogarty, C O’Rourke, P Landers, P Kent, E Lane, B Murphy, C Leahy, D Collins, B O’Connor, R Treacy, R Bernard, G Walsh, D Doherty. Subs A Fitzgibbon, C Treacy, T McCarthy

Upcoming fixtures for our U14s include hurling league and Feile. On the May Bank Holiday Monday we line out against Kiltha Óg at home in Pairc Ui Chinneide, throw in timed for 7.00 pm. We also welcome the Hurling Feile Blitz to our complex on Saturday May 7th with the first game down for an 11.00 am start. Your support would be very much appreciated. Minors Beaten in Championship Opener

Rebel Óg Carrigaline Court Premier 1 Minor Hurling Championship

Sarsfields 2-15, Killeagh-Ita’s 2-5

No joy for our minor hurlers on an evening of horrible hailstones which made skilful hurling very difficult for the players on the pitch in this preliminary round championship opener. Our team got off to a flier with two points inside the first minute – Killian Treacy winning the sliotar from the throw-in and firing over, and Sean Walsh adding a second after our hard work dispossessed Sarsfields’ defenders from the immediate puck out. Killian added a free on five minutes and it looked as if a shock might be on the cards against this ‘all-conquering’ Sars team. Sars scored the next four points between minute 7 and 14 (although they were made to work hard for them, before Killian equalised with another free. Our defenders were fighting heroically for every ball, with Dylan Hogan and Jamie Landers very effective on the right wing, and we were unlucky when what appeared to be a valid point from Aaron Walsh, signalled by the umpires, was waved wide by reiteoir Pat Lyons. In the remaining ten minutes, Sarsfields added three points without reply, and, crucially, a goal in the 25th minute from dangerous full-forward Jack O’Connor. This gave them a 1-7 to 0-4 lead ag leath-am. The second half began with a savage downpour of hailstone, and an ideal return to action for our team, with Aaron Walsh lobbing the Sars goalkeeper for a spectacular goal after just one minute to give us renewed hope. However, Sars turned the screw and, apart from a Shane Kearney point, they hit over the next five points and when O’Connor turned and finished his second goal to the far left corner of the net, it was game over. Our boys kept battling, with Keane Kelly Budds, Killian Treacy, Christy Coughlan and others working tirelessly to the end. A just reward arrived on 52 minutes when Aaron whipped in a second goal, but the gap was too wide, and ag an séideadh deiridh, bhí an bua ag na Sarséalaigh, 2-15 i gcoinne 2-5. It’s a quick turnaround now to our next game, as we play the mighty Glen Rovers on Wednesday 4th May in Ballinacurra at 7.15 p.m. please be there to support our boys!

Team: Fionn McDonnell, Dylan Hogan, Jack O’Rourke, Emmet Barron, Jamie Landers, Kevin Murphy, Christy Coughlan, David Ogbebor, Keane Kelly Budds, Eoin Fitzgibbon, Aaron Walsh (2-0), Sean Walsh (0-1), Shane Kearney (0-1), Killian Treacy (0-3, 0-2f), Andrew Leahy. Subs: Cathal Deane, Padraig Leahy, Richie Long, Barry Motherway, Adrian Galvin.

U12s get back on the horse quickly

Having been beaten by Lisgoold on Monday evening in the Fé 12 Hurling League (5-11 to 4-8), our U12 team got back to winning ways with a comprehensive win over Blarney under the shadow of the Blarney Stone on Thursday evening. This was an excellent performance from our full team, with Danny Fitzgerald, Evan Daly, Rory Motherway, Ben Budds and Callum Martin White very bust around the field, well supported by the rest of the team. Scorers in a comprehensive victory were Darragh O’Leary, Tommy Morrison, Callum, Daniel Walsh, Colm Leahy, Ben, Darragh O’Leary and Danny. Well done boys!

Team: Colm Leahy, Darragh O’Brien, Conor Meade, Ben Fogarty, David Buckley, Ben Budds, Evan Daly, Rory Motherway, Callum Martin White, Danny Fitzgerald, Darragh O’Leary, Ciaran Brennan, Daniel Walsh, Tommy Morrison.

Healthy Club Walkers and Runners Get Legs Moving

A historic evening on Tuesday last, April 26th, as our Healthy Club Project, a joint initiative between all four clubs who use Páirc Uí Chinnéide (Killeagh GAA, Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile GAA, Inch Rovers and Killeagh Camogie) began in earnest with our first walking group getting underway. One of our Project Plans is to encourage people of all ages to become more active, and one of our first actions was to set up a “Walking and Talking” group. Tuesday evenings are very busy in Páirc Uí Chinnéide, so it was decided to use this time to encourage mums, dads, grandparents and children of all ages to get walking. Two routes have been outlined in the pitch – an inner circuit of 500 m around the main pitch, and an outer circuit of 1 km around the perimeter of the whole grounds. Over 30 people of all ages (under 1 to over 70!) took off for the initial walk at 6. 15 p.m. with much enthusiasm, choosing the inner circuit to keep a watchful eye on the almost 100 boys – Under 6’s, 7’s, 8’s and 9’s – training within. The “Walking and Talking” group continues every Tuesday from 6.00 on, bring your walking shoes, enthusiasm, and a few words for your fellow walkers!

Our “Run4Fun” group began their weekly session on Saturday morning in Glenbower Wood, led by Kieran Scully. Numbers were small for the first week, but hopefully, we will enlist some more beginner and established runners to join in one of the most beautiful running spots in Ireland. Every Saturday, 9.00am

Clubs Nursery brings in the crowds

If you wanted to see what unbridled enthusiasm and excitement looks like, Saturday at noon in Pairc Uí Chinnéide was the place to be. Our first Clubs Nursery of 2016 (also part of our Healthy Club Project) saw 43 children aged 3, 4 and 5 run, jump, hop and skip around the place for 45 minutes of fun, fun, fun. We owe a word of thanks to all those who helped on the day – moms, dads, siblings and others. Its clear many hands will be needed to make light work of this bunch. Every Saturday, 12.00 noon – join the fun!

Under 12 hurlers convincing winners in opening game

Fé 12 Rebel Óg Eastern ‘A’ Hurling Killeagh-Ita’s v Erins Own

We welcomed Erins Own U12 hurling team to Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Monday April 18th. A well-contested first quarter saw both defences on top with just two early points for our boys from Daniel Walsh’s free and Colm Leahy. Our full-back line of Danny Fitzgerald, Conor Meade and Daniel Griffin came under sustained pressure but both this line and cúl báire Pierse Geary dealt with everything that came at them. However, a deserved goal eventually came on the 16th minute for Erins Own and their forwards were unlucky not to add more. In the final five minutes of the half, two more goals from Colm and another point from Daniel gave us a flattering 3-4 to 1-0 lead at half time. The second half saw further domination from our forwards, and the lead gave bainisteoir Adrian an opportunity to move players around in different positions. Ben Budds got on the score sheet and David Buckley (point) and Ben Fogarty (goal) got late scores to give our team a convincing win in the end. Well done to the Erins Own team for showing great heart right to the end, with a special mention to their ‘Killeagh-connected’ player, skilful and stylish Shane Irwin, who had an excellent game from start to finish.

Team: Pierse Geary, Danny Fitzgerald, Conor Meade, Daniel Griffin, Callum Martin-White, David Buckley, Evan Daly, Rory Motherway, Ben Budds, Ben Fogarty, Darragh O’Leary, Daniel Walsh, Eric Millerick, Colm Leahy, Ciaran Brennan.

Under 16 footballers have a 48-hour double

Fé 16 Rebel Óg Eastern B Football Bishopstown 2-5, Killeagh-Ita’s 5-6

Fé 16 Rebel Óg Eastern B Football Killeagh-Ita’s 6-7, Fr. O’Neills 5-7

A very successful week for our Under 16 footballers saw them gain maximum league points from Thursday night’s trip to Bishopstown to play their second string, and the visit of our Fr. O’Neills neighbours on Saturday afternoon to Páirc Uí Chinnéide. The Bishopstown game was that clichéd ‘game of two halves’ with a wind and a slope contributing to the home team’s domination in the first half, leading by 1-5 to 0-2 at the break. Astute changes by Tom and Colm at the break had an immediate impact on the restart, with Richie Landers marking his introduction at corner-forward with a quick goal. When Adrian Galvin goaled within three minutes, we were level, and our domination around the middle third, with Padraig Leahy, Dylan Hogan and Richie Long very busy, saw us add further goals from Barry Motherway and a brace from Richie giving him his hat-trick. In the final few minutes Bishopstown replied with a goal to leave the final score 5-6 to 2-5 in our favour.

Less than 48 hours later, our neighbours Fr. O’Neills arrived in Páirc Uí Chinnéide to play Round 4 of the Football League. Richie Landers replaced the injured Padraig Leahy in the only change to the starting fifteen. This was a real ‘all-out attack’ game, or perhaps ‘no-defence’ game, with both teams scoring some excellent goals, but also benefitting from some obvious errors in the defences of their opponents. A slow beginning on the scoreboard saw O’Neills lead by 0-2 to 0-1 after the first quarter, although we had hit both the crossbar and the post in that time. Two quick-fire goals from Richie Landers and a Jack Wyse bullet to the roof of the net, along with two points from Richie, gave us a 2-3 to 0-2 lead, before our defence took their half-time break. Trouble is, it wasn’t yet half-time, with only 26 minutes gone on referee Pa Beausang’s clock. In that crazy four minutes before half-time, we conceded a remarkable 3-2, leaving our mentors and supporters scratching their heads wondering how we had contrived to turn a seven point lead into a four point deficit so quickly. The likes of it hadn’t been seen since Offaly’s mugging of Limerick in the 1994 All-Ireland Final! The half-time talk from Tom and Colm galvanised our team who improved immeasurably at the back after half-time, and after Richie Long goaled on 39 minutes, we were back in front, 3-5 to 3-4. O’Neills got their first point of the second half mid-way through, and then their defence took their time out, allowing our forwards to score three quick goals from Adrian Galvin, Richie Long and Paul Delaney. By this time, with eight minutes to go, we led by 6-7 to 3-4 and the game looked done and dusted. However, we again took our foot off the gas, leaking 2-2 in the last eight minutes, and the three minutes of additional time seemed to stretch on for ever. Eventually, we suppressed the final attack to hold on and preserve our 100% record. Well done to the full panel of players for a great effort over the two games, with 24 players used in all.

Team: Olin Hennessy, Daragh Geary, Daniel Lucey, James Kent, Kieran Daly, Dylan Hogan, Ryan McCarthy, Barry Motherway, Padraig Leahy, Oisin McCarthy, Adrian Galvin, David Kelly, Richie Long, Jack Wyse, Andrew Foley. Subs: Cathal Fitzgibbon, Paul Delaney, Richie Landers, Owen Cosgrove, Darragh O’Connor, Olan Broderick, Robert Sinclair, George Sinclair, Karl O’Toole.

Bad Night at the Office For Minor Hurlers

Rebel Óg Premier 1 Hurling League Douglas 2-15, Killeagh-Ita’s 2-10

Just a week out from championship, and a big wake-up call for our minor hurlers who suffered their first loss in the league in a disappointing performance in Douglas on Friday night. Four players were unavailable for a variety of reasons, stretching our panel’s resources, yet this was still a sub-par effort, especially in the closing five minutes of the first half, conceding 2-2 to trail by 2-11 to 1-3, having scored our goal through Shane Kearney after just three minutes. The dressing down at half-time did reap some rewards in the second half, with improved effort throughout the field giving a better look to the scoreboard. Highlights were a goal from Killian Treacy, finishing off a fine move all the way out of defence involving five players, and an excellent Eoin Fitzgibbon run and point from the right wing. Much improvement required for our championship opener v Sarsfields in Cobh on Friday next, April 29th at 7.00 p.m.

Team: Fionn McDonnell, Dylan Hogan, Jack O’Rourke, Barry Motherway, Jamie Landers, Kevin Murphy, Cathal Deane, Christy Coughlan, Keane Kelly Budds, Eoin Fitzgibbon, Andrew Leahy, Padraig Leahy, Shane Kearney, Killian Treacy, Aaron Walsh. Subs: Richie Long, Adrian Galvin.

U13s open with a win, just!

Rebel Óg Fé 13 Premier 2 Hurling League Erin’s Own 0-10, Killeagh-Ita’s 4-3

It was a lucky win for our Under 13 hurlers in their opening game of this year’s hurling league in Caherlag on Sunday April 24th. Both teams played excellent hurling in patches, with Erin’s Own probably more consistent over the hour. Nevertheless, two excellent David Buckley goals in the first half (10th and 13th minutes) gave us a three point lead at the break (2-2 to 0-5). Two quick-fire goals just after half-time from a George Walsh free and Callum Martin White (after a great shot from Ciaran Brennan was excellently saved) gave us a cushion of 4-2 to 0-5. We only added one more point, from a long distance free by George, while Erin’s Own added on five more points. Were it not for a brilliant save from the same David Buckley (cúl báire for second half) and a penalty that went over rather than under the bar, it could have been victory for our hosts. Well done to our team who did what needed to be done to get the points, with Jamie Fogarty outstanding at full back, batting and clearing away everything that came his way.

Team: Conor Meade, Rory Motherway, Jamie Fogarty, Jack Flanagan, Rory Lynch, George Walsh, Padraig Mackey, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Evan Lane, David Buttimer, Colm Treacy, Eoin Brenner, Ben Fogarty, David Buckley, Daniel Walsh, Ciaran Brennan, Callum Martin White.

Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile News

Peaceful Pilmore Provides Pitch and Point

Rebel Óg Eastern ‘A’ Fé 13 Football League Killeagh-Ita’s 3-6, Inniscarra 2-9

After Sunday’s deluge and storm, Páirc Uí Ghrifín in Pilmore was called into action for our Under 13 footballers’ opening league game against Inniscarra on Monday evening last, with all three pitches in Páirc Uí Chinnéide not fit for games. The calm evening and the peaceful surroundings were in keeping with the mood of the players and their mentors and supporters, who all enjoyed a fantastic game of football under the charge of reiteoir Mary Swayne. It didn’t appear to look so appealing for our boys after six minutes, with Inniscarra charging out of the blocks and banging in two goals in quick succession. We settled, slowly, with Eoin Brenner kicking two points from frees, and by the 19th minute we had levelled matters (2-2 each) with Dale McMahon and Conor Meade getting the goals. Conor’s goal was an excellent team move with Eoin Brenner’s knock-down allowing Conor to finish. A further point apiece (ours a fine effort from Evan Lane) left the teams level at half time. Paudie Mackey, Colm Treacy, George Walsh, Rory Lynch and Cormac Fitzpatrick were among our leading players in this half. The second half saw our boys dominate the first five minutes but unfortunately we failed to add to our score, and we were to rue our missed chances as Inniscarra took over for the next ten minutes, kicking four points in a row to turn the screw. David Buckley kicked over to reduce the deficit, and then Daniel Walsh goaled to level. With ten minutes to go, Jamie Fogarty kicked us into the lead, but Inniscarra came back and added two further points which swung the pendulum in their direction. As our defenders repelled further attacks, the ball was worked carefully up to the Inniscarra danger area, and when a free was awarded on the 20 metre line, Eoin Brenner kept his nerve to kick the levelling score. A fair result to a most entertaining game as the sun went down behind us! Many thanks to the St. Ita’s club for making their pitch available at short notice, and in particular to Denis Doherty for preparing the pitch in advance of the game.

Team: Callum Martin White, Jack Flanagan, Jamie Fogarty, Ben Budds, Paudie Mackey, George Walsh, Rory Lynch, Evan Lane, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Dale McMahon, Colm Treacy, David Buttimer, Eoin Brenner, Conor Meade, Cormac Fitzpatrick. Subs: Daniel Walsh, David Buckley, Ben Fogarty, Rory Motherway.

Minor Hurlers Win Again

Premier 1 Minor Hurling League Killeagh-Ita’s 1-14, Midleton 2-8

A good second-half performance gave our minors their second win of the league against a strong Midleton team in Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Wednesday last. This was a good quality game which entertained the supporters from Killeagh and Midleton as well as some interested Glanmire observers. Scores were at a premium in the first half with just six points shared between the teams for 28 minutes – Aaron Walsh’s brace and a ’65 from Killian Treacy being our scores. Killian’s free gave us the lead for the fourth time on 29 minutes but we were rocked by a goal and a point from Midleton just before half-time which left us trailing by 1-4 to 0-4 on Brian Murphy’s half-time whistle. The second half saw our defensive work continue throughout the pitch, while our forwards began to get on the ball and convert more scores. Five points in the first eight minutes (three from Killian’s frees, one each from Aaron and Sean Walsh) extended our lead to four as Midleton were restricted to just one in reply. Further points from Killian (one each from play and from a free) were cancelled out by Midleton scores, before a fine goal from Andrew Leahy pushed us further ahead – 1- 11 to 1-7 with eight minutes left. This lead was far from comfortable, however, and our defence had to maintain their discipline and alertness to prevent Midleton on numerous occasions. Andrew’s point on fifty six minutes was wedged between two frees from Kevin Murphy (very dominant throughout at centre-back) and Killian. Our impressive full-back line of Dylan Hogan, Jack O’Rourke and Emmet Barron continued their nobody-through policy for the final minutes but Midleton came right back into it with a point and a goal, just like the first half, at the very end, leaving us with a dangerous two-point lead. Thankfully a final free from Killian settled the nerves, giving us a deserved victory ag deireadh an chluiche. League match number 3 is away to Douglas on Friday 22nd, followed by championship against Sarsfields on April 29th. Clock is ticking!

Team: Fionn McDonnell, Dylan Hogan, Jack O’Rourke, Emmet Barron, Jamie Landers, Kevin Murphy, Luke Fogarty, Keane Kelly Budds, Christy Coughlan, Eoin Fitzgibbon, Andrew Leahy, David Ogbebor, Aaron Walsh, Killian Treacy, Sean Walsh. Subs: Cathal Deane, Padraig Leahy, Richie Long, Barry Motherway.

No joy for Under 16s on first day out

Rebel Óg Eastern A Fé 16 Hurling League Killeagh-Ita’s 3-10, Kiltha Óg 3-18

A high-scoring game gave supporters of both teams great thrills on Thursday evening last in Páirc Uí Chinnéide, but unfortunately for our boys, Kiltha Óg scored more than we did and thus came away with the points. It looked promising for us in the first few minutes as Richie Landers (2) and Richie Long gave us a three point lead. Kiltha got on the scoreboard with two frees and one from play, and by nineteen minutes we held a 7-5 lead, with points from Padraig Leahy (2) and a brace from Richie Long. Adrian Galvin was hurling excellent ball on the left wing, while Kieran Daly was mopping up everything in his right corner. We were then rocked by an excellent first goal of two from Kiltha full-forward Kyle Quinn-Waites before Padraig Leahy replied with an impressive green flag finish for us. Kiltha took control of the final five minutes, scoring 1-2 without reply to lead 2-8 to 1-7 at half-time. The second half saw some positional changes in our side which shored up some gaps but created gaps in other areas. Kiltha continued to dominate throughout the field, with Daragh Moran and Joe Stack on opposite ‘40s leading their charge. Nonetheless our boys kept battling away with Richie Long and Olan Broderick scoring two great goals, although Kiltha scored the next point immediately after each goal to quash our fight back. With two minutes to go we bombarded the Kiltha goal line but could not get the fourth goal that might have salvaged a draw, and with the final play, Kiltha attacked at the other end and goaled to give them a rather flattering eight point victory at referee Michael Mulry’s final whistle.

Team: Dara Motherway, Paul Delaney, Darragh Geary, Kieran Daly, Ryan McCarthy, Dylan Hogan, Adrian Galvin, David Kelly, Barry Motherway, Richie Long, Jack Wyse, Padraig Leahy, Olin Hennessy, Richie Landers, Olan Broderick. Subs used: Robert Sinclair, Owen Cosgrove, Brian Murphy, Danny Cunningham, Cathal Fitzgibbon.

U15s finish strongly to win

Rebel Óg Premier 2 Fé 15 Hurling League Killeagh-Ita’s 3-11, Ballygarvan 1-11

An excellent game of hurling on Sunday afternoon last saw our Under 15 team get a late scoring burst of 1-3 in the final five minutes to pip Ballygarvan in Round 2 of the league. Both teams were missing key players, with our full-back line depleted through injury. George Sinclair and Oisin McCarthy stepped into the breach and performed admirably throughout, alongside the ever consistent Paul Delaney. Having started in a whirlwind with a goal by Ben O’Connor in the first minute, we promptly fell asleep for fifteen minutes, allowing Ballygarvan to go ahead by the 18th minute with five points, to which we only offered one Olan Broderick point in reply. However, Ben’s second goal, following a flick on from Dara Motherway, gave us the unusual score of 2-1, and two further points from Dara and Richie Landers gave us a three point cushion – 2-3 to 0-6 at Jim Daly’s half-time whistle. The second half saw us in command for the first ten minutes with Ben, Dara and Olan all adding scores to give us a 2-8 to 0-8 lead. The next fifteen minutes saw another hibernation period for our team, as we went scoreless while Ballygarvan scored 1-3 to equalise with two minutes left. Late points from Ben and Olan and a fine goal from Dara in added time gave us a flattering cushion on the final whistle – 3-11 to 1-11. Next up is a trip to Valley Rovers on Saturday April 30th.

Team: Brian Murphy, George Sinclair, Oisin McCarthy, Paul Delaney, Robert Sinclair, Ryan McCarthy, Richie Landers, David Kelly, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Dara Motherway, Olan Broderick, Owen Cosgrove, Aaron O’Connell, Ben O’Connor, Darragh O’Connor. Subs: Christian Coughlan, Robbie Treacy, Ciaran O’Rourke.
