Killeagh-Ita’s Juvenile Club Notes
GAME OF THE YEAR SEES MINOR FOOTBALLERS PROGRESS
Rebel Óg Eastern B Football Championship Killeagh-Ita’s 2-16, Cobh 2-12 (AET)
Full credit to both teams who contributed so much to a most exciting and entertaining game of championship football which was played on Sunday evening last in Páirc Uí Chinnéide. Jim Daly was the man in the middle, and Cobh got off to the better start, with four excellent points in the first nine minutes. Sean Walsh kicked his first free over the bar on 12 minutes to get us operational on the scoreboard and added a point from play shortly after. Fionn McDonnell got a third score, while in defence and midfield Emmet Barron, Eoin Fitzgibbon and Cathal Deane were playing exceptionally well. We had a let off on 22 minutes when cúl báire Adrian Galvin made a point-blank save, although Cobh did add two further points before half time. Sandwiched between these scores, however, was a crucial penalty which was expertly converted to the net by Sean Walsh, thus leaving the sides ar chomhscór ag leath am – 1-3 to 0-6. Cobh again started the second half in better form, with two goals of their own in the first 10 minutes, while David Ogbebor (he’d break the GPS tracker if someone was brave enough to put it on him!) pointed after a great run. On 42 minutes, it looked ominous, with Cobh leading by 2-7 to 0-8, but our team showed unbelievable heart and effort to claw back the deficit with six unanswered points from Sean Walsh (three frees, one from play), David, and an excellent effort from Christy Coughlan which gave us the lead with three minutes remaining. Cobh showed that they were not lacking in heart or effort either in getting an equaliser, while both sides had late chances to win from frees, but neither were converted, so we were on to extra time, with the scores deadlocked 1-11 to 2-8. Extra time saw the advantage swing one way and then the other. We got two points initially from Sean Walsh and the super engine Keane Budds, but then Cobh kicked four of their own in a five minute spell to take a 2 point lead at the turn around. With light fading, we needed to give one more push, and our captain, David Ogbebor rallied his troops with one last call. The call worked, with Christy Coughlan kicking two unbelievable points from 40 and 45 metres out to level it, before Sean Walsh pointed a free with four minutes left to give us the lead once more. The icing on the cake was a goal from Richie Long with three minutes left, and some brilliant defending in the closing minutes to keep Cobh’s score at 2-12. In a weekend that saw two amazing All-Ireland Hurling Semi-Final games, we had our own bit of excitement and drama in Páirc Uí Chinnéide to remind us what’s special about sport.
Team: Adrian Galvin, Barry Motherway, Emmet Barron, Kieran Daly, Christy Coughlan (0-3), Jack O’Rourke, Dylan Hogan, Keane Kelly Budds (0-1), Eoin Fitzgibbon, Cathal Deane, David Ogbebor (0-2), Luke Fogarty, Fionn McDonnell (0-1), Sean Walsh (1-9, 1-6 from frees), Richie Long (1-0). U12s get in some good practice ahead of semi-final
Our Under 12 hurlers had two very good games in the past week in preparation for their Eastern ‘A’ semi-final against Erins Own which takes place next Saturday in Caherlag at 3.30 p.m. We travelled to Sarsfields on Monday evening (although the jerseys didn’t!!!) and had a great tussle with our hosts who beat us by 7-11 to 5-11. Colm Leahy and Rory Motherway both scored two goals each, with Daniel Walsh adding the fifth along with some excellent points from frees. David Buckley was a livewire at midfield, ably assisted by Callum Martin White, while Nathan Mulcahy and Tommy Morrison worked really hard up front. On Saturday we played an understrength Midleton team at home and won by 3-7 to 1-5 with Daniel Walsh and Colm Leahy doing the bulk of the scoring. The platform for this win though was an excellent defence where Darragh O’Leary at full-back and the half-back line of Ben Fogarty, Ben Budds and Conor Meade were brilliant from start to finish. Not a bad week for our bainisteoir Adrian with both his teams (under 12 hurlers and minor footballers) giving him lots to be proud of!
Panel: Pierse Geary, Dylan McCarthy, Darragh O’Leary, Evan Daly, Ben Fogarty, Ben Budds, Conor Meade, David Buckley, Callum Martin White, Daniel Walsh, Rory Motherway, Colm Leahy, Tommy Morrison, Danny Fitzgerald, Ciaran Brennan, Nathan Mulcahy.
Brookes Super Valu comes up trumps again
We would like to thank Brookes Super Valu, Youghal, and Cork senior footballer Eoin Cadogan, who presented a range of playing equipment to Killeagh-Ita’s on Thursday evening last. Bibs, footballs, cones, gear bags and ladders will all be very useful for our juvenile teams in the coming months, and all we had to do was turn up for the photo-shoot! Thanks to Ken and Peter Brookes and to the Musgrave / Super Valu group for thinking of us! Eoin Cadogan (Cork Senior Footballer) presents GAA kit to Killeagh-Ita’s representatives Rory Motherway, Orla Motherway and Sadhbh McDonnell in Brookes Super Valu, Youghal. Included are Ken Brookes and Peter Brookes.
U16 Football League
Our U16 footballers took to a wind and rain swept pitch on Friday night to play St Colmans in an U16 league fixture. It was a good game for both teams in tough conditions and both sets of players deserve credit for the display under such terrible conditions. Whilst it was a good game, Killeagh-Ita’s emerged victorious having been the dominant team in both periods. A strong squad of twenty players showed up for the game and all players got a good run. Next up is a league fixture against Whitechurch this coming week and on Sunday next, August 28th we are hoping to take the players to Abbotstown and Croke Park for the All-Ireland semi-final between Kerry and Dublin.
Squad on Friday night was R Treacy, D Geary, D Lucey, J Kent, C Fitzgibbon, D Hogan, D Kelly R McCarthy, P Leahy, O Broderick, O Hennessey, A Galvin, R Landers, R Long, P Delaney, C McDonald, O McCarthy, D O’Connor, L McCarthy, D Cunningham.
U8 Football Blitz
Pairc Ui Chinneide played host once again to a football blitz for U8’s on Saturday morning. Organised expertly once again by GDA Shane Supple it commenced at 10.00am and was all finished by 1.00pm. It was a good day weather-wise with the rain holding off and despite the windy conditions everybody seemed to enjoy the experience…especially the kids. A total of 24 teams took part with each getting three games and in keeping with our Healthy Club Project the refreshments were fresh fruit and juices. Complimentary teas and coffee were also available with Niamh, Fidelma and Sadhbh on hand to serve everybody. Well done to all involved and we hope all our visitors enjoyed their day at Killeagh GAA Club.
U12 Killeagh-Ita’s vs Erins Own
This game was played in Caherlag on Saturday afternoon and was an Eastern ‘A’ League semi-final. Although the weather was poor, it did not affect the lads as they put in a fine performance to land the spoils and head for the final on August 27th. It was a dour first half and to be fair to both teams they played very well in difficult conditions and scores were hard to come by with the teams’ level at half-time with three points each. Daniel Walsh scored all three points for Killeagh-Ita’s and he then added a goal and a point straight after the restart. David Buckley added a point before Tommy Morrisson added a cracker of a goal. Callum Martin White scored a point before Daniel Walsh took over with three more points. Finally Colm Leahy worked very hard and was rewarded with a fine goal to end the game on a final score of 3-09 to 0-04. Well done to all concerned for reaching a final and especially to Ali Budds for organising the jerseys. Enjoy the blitz on Tuesday lads in Thurles.
Team: Pierce Geary, Darragh O’Leary, David Buckley, Ciaran Brendan, Conor Meade, Ben Budds, Colm Leahy, Ben Fogarty, Callum Martin White, Daniel Walsh, Dylan McCarthy, Tommy Morrison, Evan Daly, Nathan Mulcahy and our sub was Jack O’Connor.
U16 Killeagh-Ita’s vs Ballinhassig
This game was a league fixture played in Ballinhassig on Sunday evening. It was played under testing conditions due to the inclement weather. However, the lads played very well and came through the test. They scored some lovely points in the first half and were well in control at the halfway stage. They chalked up the only goal of the game just after half-time and continued to dominate up to the final whistle. They used up the five subs midway through the second half to give everybody who travelled some game time.
Squad: B Murphy, D Geary, J Kent, D Lucey, R Landers, A Galvin, K Daly, D Kelly, P Leahy, O McCarthy, R McCarthy, R Long, C Fitzgibbon, O Broderick, O Hennessey, D Cunningham, D O’Connor, P Delaney, C McDonald, D Hogan.
